DaMar Dowell, DEI Coordinator, reflects on their recent visit to Nichols:

Our trip to Nichols was a time of connection and reflection. The theme of the event was service, community building and storytelling. As guest host for the event, I facilitated a conversation on what it means to serve, interviewing 3 instrctors from Nichols that had taken several students to different organizations to serve at the day before, including Friends of the night people, St. Luke’s Mission, and Foodbank of WNY.

We then transitioned to the storytelling portion of the event. Our very own Janiya People’s (AKA Left Eye The 2nd) performed her own song. We connected this song to “Black Love” and how Janiya’s words were probably similar to how Coretta Scott-King felt when she first met Martin in 1938.

We then had spoken word poetry by nationally know Jillian Hansworth, A gospel selection by the talented Darcel Blue, and a Keynote message on “The Content of Our Character” by local pastor L. Darnell Donalson.

Upon returning to school, I asked each student to share something they learned from the trip and the feedback was great! Looking forward to building upon this momentum for our DEI committee.
