Mount Mercy Welcomes New York State Senator April Baskin

Mount Mercy Academy was overjoyed to welcome New York State Senator April Baskin to campus, where she engaged our seniors in an inspiring and dynamic conversation as part of our new ERA (Education Revolution Association) program. Senator Baskin, who represents New York’s 63rd Senate District, is the first African-American woman elected to this seat. She has long been recognized as a trailblazer for women and people of color in government, as well as a passionate advocate for community service, youth empowerment, and equity in education and opportunity.

During her visit, Senator Baskin shared her background, upbringing, and what led her into politics. Her path to government began with a deep commitment to public service and outreach, a dedication she attributes to her family and early experiences. “I always had a heart to serve people,” Senator Baskin reflected. “I was raised with a responsibility to serve and so because that skill set was embedded in me so young it was easy for me when I decided to run for office, to appeal to my neighbors and say, listen I want to serve you and here's what I'm gonna do.”

She spoke about the importance of policy-making, the next pieces of legislation she is working on, and the realities of working in government as a woman. Her candor and enthusiasm resonated deeply with the students, who asked thoughtful and well-prepared questions throughout the interview.

Senator Baskin emphasized the heart of public service as a cornerstone of good leadership:

“Public service really is the art of being a successful politician and the better public servant that you are, the better government servant that you will be.”

Her honesty and insight captivated our students, giving them a real-world perspective on leadership, resilience, and the power of serving one’s community.

“The idea of doing for others is the key ingredient in being a successful leader, and you will not be a successful elected official without having a knack for leadership and serving others and living outside of yourself.”

The interview was conducted by seniors Mariana Acosta and Tamara Olomou Fuentes, alongside our Dean of Curriculum, Dr. Amanda Ramia. This format reflects Mount Mercy’s innovative ERA Life Discovery curriculum, which empowers students to learn through real-world experiences and project-based learning (PBL). ERA envisions “a future in which the American education system empowers every student with the skills, knowledge, and mindset needed to thrive in the modern world,” and Life Discovery Interviews like this one are a central part of the program.

Through PBL, our students don’t just study from books, they actively engage with leaders, professionals, and communities. This approach places Mount Mercy on the forefront of education, helping students build the skills, confidence, and vision to thrive long after graduation. Senator Baskin’s visit highlighted the strength of this model, showing our seniors how leadership and service intertwine in meaningful ways.

To make the day even sweeter, Senator Baskin treated our students to Paula’s Donuts and cider, a generous gesture that reflected her warmth and thoughtfulness.

It was a truly inspirational and exciting day at Mount Mercy Academy. We are beyond grateful to Senator April Baskin for taking the time to share her journey, her wisdom, and her heart for service with our students. The lessons she left with us will continue to inspire our community as we help young women discover their potential and embrace their own paths to leadership.
