Project-based learning in action!
Our Honors Living Environment students have been deeply engaged in a year-long, hands-on exploration of plant growth and seed development. Their journey began with selecting seedlings of their choice, followed by months of research, observation, and care. Early in the project, they were fortunate to receive a classroom visit from Andrea Masterson of the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, who offered expert guidance, answered questions, and helped the girls nurture their plants. This week, the students had the incredible opportunity to present their work at the Botanical Gardens. They created online portfolios, tri-fold displays, and delivered verbal presentations sharing their findings—discussing why they chose specific seeds, what they learned, and how their setbacks contributed to their growth. Their thoughtful, confident presentations impressed students from Erie 1 BOCES’ plant program as well as staff from the Gardens. Afterward, the girls enjoyed a guided tour with Andrea Masterson, deepening their appreciation for plant life. This experience not only strengthened their scientific knowledge but also fostered a greater respect and compassion for all living things. We are so proud of their hard work and enthusiasm—and a HUGE congratulations to their amazing teacher, Ms. Kim Rauscher, for her dedication and guidance! We’re incredibly grateful to our community partners, especially the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, for making experiences like this possible. Project-based, hands-on learning is truly setting our students up for success!
