Each year, Mount Mercy students are required to complete summer reading and an associated assignment. This year, instead of giving students reading choices, we have decided to have the whole school (students and faculty) read the same book over the summer. The hope is that it will build our school community, and give everyone something in common with one another, starting from day one in September.
There were two suggestions for the book selection and students and faculty voted. The winner was The Women, by Kristin Hannah.
The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm's way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.
Previously, the faculty have not been asked to participate in summer reading. However, we think that this is a wonderful way to unify the whole school. Hopefully, everyone can get something meaningful out of the reading!
Students should click the link to view their assignment along with any additional reading to be completed by AP classes.
