The Mount Mercy Science and Healthcare Academy juniors recently had an unforgettable and truly inspiring experience during their visit to the SPCA. As part of their Veterinary Medicine Intensive Program, students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in hands-on, real-world learning that brought their classroom studies to life in powerful ways.
Throughout the day, students engaged in a variety of interactive activities designed to deepen their understanding of animal care and medical science. They participated in a hand-washing simulation that reinforced the importance of proper hygiene in clinical settings, and explored the critical issue of pet overpopulation through a thoughtful, eye-opening activity. In a creative twist on learning medical terminology, students dissected gummy bears, an engaging exercise that helped them better understand anatomy and directional terms in a memorable way.
The experience extended even further as students practiced taking vital signs, both on themselves and on a live ferret, giving them a glimpse into the daily responsibilities of veterinary professionals. One of the most impactful moments of the day was when students suited up in proper protective gear to observe a live surgery. This year’s group witnessed not only a cat being spayed, but also the final suturing of a cat following a leg amputation.
In an extraordinary extension of the learning experience, the surgeon brought the amputated leg as well as the uterine horns and ovaries to the examination table, allowing students to observe these specimens up close. This moment sparked curiosity, thoughtful questions, and meaningful connections between their academic studies and real-world veterinary practice.
Experiences like this highlight the strength of Mount Mercy’s project-based learning curriculum, which emphasizes active engagement, critical thinking, and real-world application. By stepping beyond the classroom and into authentic professional environments, students gain a deeper understanding of their studies and the careers they may one day pursue.
Our Academies within the Academy continue to provide exceptional opportunities for students to explore their interests in focused, meaningful ways. These experiences not only build knowledge but also confidence, curiosity, and a passion for lifelong learning.
We are incredibly proud of our continued partnership with the SPCA, whose dedication to education and animal care makes opportunities like this possible. A special thank you goes to Academy Moderator Ms. Kim Rauscher for her leadership and commitment to creating such impactful experiences for our students.
This was more than just a field trip, it was a transformative learning experience that our students will carry with them well into their futures.
