Last week, Mercy celebrated Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month with an engaging day of learning, culture, and community!
Recognizing and celebrating cultures different from our own is an important part of the Mercy Mission. We strive to empower our students to be confident leaders in a global community by fostering understanding, respect, and appreciation for diverse perspectives and experiences.
Students participated in a special assembly where they rotated through a variety of interactive rooms and stations. In the dining hall, Zuri Taylor Houston presented “Why We Celebrate AAPI Month,” helping students understand the significance of honoring AAPI history, achievements, and contributions. Students also enjoyed delicious California rolls while learning about the origins and history of sushi through a presentation by Harmony Peterson.
The gym was filled with energy and excitement as Malorie Schmelzinger, assisted by Key’Arie Rhoads and Makayla Boncore, introduced students to the history and global impact of K-Pop. Afterward, everyone had a great time dancing and playing Just Dance to favorites like “Gangnam Style” and “BANG BANG BANG.”
In classrooms throughout the school, DeMara Scarver, Yemayah Roberts, and Nayeli Agosto shared children’s books that celebrate AAPI culture, including Where Three Oceans Meet, The Name Jar, and Everyone Loves Lunchtime Except Zia. These stories highlight young characters learning to embrace their identities, honor their cultural heritage, and take pride in their family traditions while navigating the challenges of feeling different.
It was a wonderful day of learning, celebration, and connection, and our students had an amazing time!
Thank you to all of the students who helped plan and facilitate this special event. A special thank you to Cultural Development, Belonging, and Dignity Coordinator Theresa Tomasulo for working alongside our students and helping create such a meaningful and memorable celebration.
