Leadership Academy

by Pat Burns

Mount Mercy Academy, under the direction of Mrs. Suzanne Overdorf, held its third session of its Leadership Program for females in eighth grade from local Catholic, Public and Charter schools. The program meets once per quarter at Mount Mercy Academy. The Institute will culminate with a graduation ceremony in May.

A highlight of this session was a guest presentation by Dr. James Newton, the principal of Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School.  Newton, a retired public-school administrator, spoke about the seven resources of leadership.  He shared with the academy students copies of a book that he was a contributing author for, The Recipe for Success. Newton spoke about body language and non-verbal communication.

"Mercy is more than just a school. Mercy is my second home and a shoulder to lean on. Mount Mercy has given me the confidence and resources to pursue my passions and make the world a more inclusive place, propelling me to take strides into male-dominated fields. Mercy blessed me with an environment to grow intellectually and in the community, giving me the foundation to make a tangible impact while making lifelong friendships."
