Mount Mercy Oratory and Debate Team Shines

The Mount Mercy Academy Oratory and Debate team recently competed in the City Honors’ Speech and Debate Tournament and placed third overall.  The team received a trophy for its efforts.

Sophomore Emily Rhoads (Orchard Park) placed first in Declamation (speaker recites a previously written speech) and as a result qualified for the New York State Championships in April.  Mary Bush (Hamburg), also a sophomore, placed second in Original Oratory (speaker writes and presents her own speech) and is half-way to qualifying for the state championship.  A third sophomore, Lara Groves (Buffalo) finished third in Declamation.  Freshman RaeAnna Gott placed third in Oral Interpretation of Literature (interpreting and reading prose or poetry).

The Mount Mercy Oratory and Debate team will compete next at the Brighton High School tournament in Rochester on December 1.  The team is coached by Catherine Luhr, Mount Mercy’s assistant principal and history teacher.

"Mount Mercy has taught me some of the most important things in my life and I am so grateful for that. I know that incorporating the principles of a woman of Mercy has made me the best version of myself. I can only hope that in the future, I will continue to grow and teach others the valuable lessons that I was taught at Mount Mercy. While I have learned so many things here, the greatest thing by far that I have learned is that DNA does not always make a family, love makes a family and that is exactly what I have gained here, a second family."
