MMA Catholic Health System Update

MOUNT MERCY ACADEMY IN PARTNERHSIP WITH CATHOLIC HEALTH SYSTEM

GOAL:  

To provide our students with a diverse sampling of various opportunities a health system can provide in terms of career planning and employment.

 COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM:

Freshman/Sophomore Opportunities:
HEALTH CARE CAREER CLUB
Interested students from Mercy and Timon will participate together in a Health Care Career Club which will meet 4 times per school year. Catholic Health associates from various clinical fields will discuss their careers.  Interactive demonstrations and various activities will be included. MASH CAMP on site at a hospital will provide in depth exposure to the clinical setting of a variety of departments. This will be held at the end of Sophomore year to promote the Junior year opportunities available.

Junior Year Opportunities:
ON-SITE VOLUNTEER ROTATION EXPERIENCE
After having participated in the Health Care Career Club the collaboration will bring juniors on-site at Mercy Hospital, Athleti-Care, OLV Campus and other locations which will host students on a rotating basis throughout the school year.  Plans are for a 1 ½ hour rotation per week in a department for a two month period.

Senior Year Opportunities:
SHADOWING, MENTORING, INTERNSHIPS
After the junior rotations those students interested in health care professions will be able to choose one or two areas of particular interest for a more comprehensive experience in particular departments.  Details of criteria and requirements are available through the Guidance Department.

  

OTHER VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

CAMPUS MINISTRY
  Christian Service at one of the Catholic Health facilities including Mercy Hospital and the Senior Campus at Our Lady of Victory.  Details are available through the Campus Ministry Department as well as volunteer application forms.

Retreat for Sophomores at the OLV Senior Campus.

MAST  - Mt. Mercy Academy Science and Technology Academy Program of Recommended Studies in support of health/science professions
Advanced Placement Courses and concurrent enrollment with local colleges
Science Class Tours of various hospitals and departments  
Internships at other facilities, e.g. Univ. of Buffalo,Hauptman-Woodward   Research, Roswell Park
